Fair Use: Above The Fold
by mg at 11:23 AM on March 31, 2003
Recently, the New York Press voted political cartoonist the second most annoying person in New York City. They called him “just another self-righteous shitheel” and declared his “attempts at political commentary and liberal activism do more harm to the cause than any amount of conservative clampdown.” Rall’s work tends to raise the cockles of many bloggers too, including, recently, Michele and Dodd. I’d have been more than willing to let anything Rall had to say pass, not falling victim to his “self-created controversy.”
Then I got this weeks Rolling Stone magazine (I get it free), and there was an article about political cartoonists. Now, I understand RS is hardly a bastion of evenhanded journalism, but of the five artists featured in the article, each was decidedly liberal. Are there really no conservative political cartoonists?
Bill Clinton, who really needs something to keep him busy, spoke a couple weeks ago about the lack of liberal radio hosts, compared to the overwhelming success of the O’Reillys and Limbaughs. Do conservatives and hawks just get off on the aural? If someone were to put the same stories in a 3, or 6-panel cartoon, would no one care enough to read it?
Well, I guess we’ll find out.

The name, Fair Use comes from the fact I'm using images copyrighted by someone other than me, and I don't want to get sued. Please don't sue me.
Also, if people are into this, I'll try to do it fairly regularly, two or three times a week. If not, well, I'll do it a couple times a week for the next couple weeks and then I'll slowly taper off until months later when someone asks about it I'll pretend I have no idea what they are talking about. At any rate, I'll be posting them up to the main page, but all the Fair Use strips will be listed, well, at the link I just gave.

Excellent.
Maybe have a person who can kind-of-draw create some original art for the strips you write so you don't have to steal imagery?
You know someone like ...

Classic. Looks like someone is going to be a busy busy bee.

I know someone else
who is like a freaking genius in Paint. That's right. Paint. Shut up.
But I guess I should only draw cartoons to be used for liberal causes...
by Linz at March 31, 2003 1:28 PM
That's pretty freaking good for Paint.
by MrBlank at March 31, 2003 3:32 PM
I'd say that was a pretty good job with the Paint, except I can't read a word of it.
As for devoting your talents to liberal causes... whatever. The only reason I mentioned it being a more conservative strip is because the professional artists out there are so ridiculously liberal. Rall, for example, has written strips saying that Americans supporting the war are Nazis, and calling the American military nothing more than mafioso-like contract killers.
There is a difference between being a satirist and being an asshat. Rall is an asshat. I hope to be a little closer to the satirist side. Besides, I've already scripted enough strips to go daily for the next month, and they aren't so much conservative as not asshat-like. You'll probably agree with a lot of them Linz.

Umm... what's an "asshat"?

I like the strips but why can't they just be here so we don't have to memorize links? You've got 2 volunteer artists already.

I'll show you the next time I see you.
by mg at March 31, 2003 6:11 PM
They will be here. But they'll also be there, so if anyone wanted to link to them, they could link to somewhere all the strips will be in one place. Actually, I was thinking that maybe I wouldn't put them here, since it might overwhelm the rest of the posts. Thoughts?

I love the Triple Double Humility, MG. Admitting that you are trying to be humble by outlining your scheme when someone asks you about the comics(your last paragraph in the post), pretend that you don't know what they are talking about... "Oh, those, you mean, oh, yeah, I was just screwing around..." I like the captions, but I don't like the illustrations. I like cute, funny comics, with cute cuddlebug characters. I do think it takes away from the posts, In fact, I appreciate the new 'COLLAPSE' fx. 132am est, april 1, 2003 c.e. Some say the endgame will come in two days, something publicly tangible. I had to wear a skullcap that looked like both a kippah and a islamic asshat.

Sorry mg, I'm new at this still. Try this one. I have a feeling it's gonna be super big though.
I LOVE ass hats!
