An Open Letter to Janet Jackson
by space at 08:31 PM on September 30, 2001
Dear Ms. Jackson,
I just heard one of your hit singles on the radio and felt I should write you.
I'm not sure what song it was (it had a lot of "baby"s in it, does that help?), and that's partly the reason I'm writing. I'm inspired to write to you only because I was so unmoved by the song. It's totally unremarkable, and I was so astonished by my utter lack of reaction that I thought I should share.
It's not just that it's indistinguishable from your other pop songs. It is, but that's important only so much as your other songs also completely fail to excite any response in me. I don't feel one way other another about it. It's not that it's so bad; in fact, it transcends "good" and "bad" to become something totally irrelevant, something that may as well not exist at all.
At least with a pop song like "Bootylicious," I can enjoy the kitsch value. In bad rap-rock, I can appreciate the energy and mutter in disgust. Muzak is your partner in blandness, but that's music designed to be ignored. I don't think that's what you had in mind. Actually, even Muzak has the power to stop me in my tracks when I hear a K.I.S.S. song over the P.A. at Walgreens. I can't see that happening with your music.
We're living in a time and place where many people feel they don't matter because they're not famous, and yet they admire a hugely famous person whose music doesn't matter at all. I'd investigate the ironic potential, but frankly, I just don't care.
In fact, I'm not sure I've ever cared less about anything in my entire life. I've held stronger opinions on dishwashing liquid than I have about your music.
Sometimes blandness is a good thing: in saltine crackers, for example. I'm just not sure it's such an admirable goal for a musician. If it's not a goal, then it's not an admirable effect.
Anyway, please don't take this personally. I'm sure you're a fine person, and I wish you the best of luck with your recording career. May you continue to record your music and sell millions of albums.
Or not. Whatever, I'm not likely to notice.
Apathetically yours,
space
P.S. I would not, however, kick you out of bed for eating the aforementioned saltine crackers.

None of us would kick Ms. Jackson out of bed for eating saltines, even though some of us are moved to invoke the standard I'm-not-gay disclaimer on that one. She is hot, however her music is that exact-body-temperature bathwater that you don't even feel as you step in the tub. Please someone stop me from commenting when i have a buzz. Please.

I would kick anyone out of bed for eating anything that made crumbs. Horrid things, crumbs in bed. Disgusterous and sickable.
by suey at October 1, 2001 11:25 AM
You sound like my old roomate, Suey. He always used that expression. One day he decided he didn't have to stand for that sort of behavior, and from then on, he would kick hot girls out of his bed for eating crackers.
THE END
by space at October 1, 2001 12:36 PM
KD, I must disagree with you. I would, indeed, kick Ms. Jackson out of bed for eating crackers. I wouldn't have until she got more plastic surgery, but there is now something quite odd looking about her face. She was beautiful before that. So I wouldn't have kicked Janet circa 1993 out of bed for eating crackers. But now? Nocrumbs for me! Her music, however, has remained consistantly tepid.
Have I mentioned that I'm not gay?
by SwingCheese at October 1, 2001 3:32 PM
lol that was kinda funny. Funny in that you say you could care less about her music but yet you were moved enough to write this lol. BTW it might be a good idea to listen to the rest of the songs on her album before you try and make a judgement on her based on one song. You may not think her music matters but obviously millions of people around the world do as well as a great majority of the music world.

I think janet Jackson is one of the best female artists around. She has made some brilliant music in the past and the present. Shes a real role model and someone I look up to shes not your average Britney Spears trying to please everyone. Shes real and shes true about herself whether she is gay or no I am still a big fan of hers.
P.s shes the sista of MJ!

jj is quite innocuous, the test of when something REALLY doesn't register: occasionally a good song will pop into my head that i want to hear, so i will look for a radio, and then i will realize not only is the jj-type song playing, but that the radio is already on and in the room because i turned it on 2 minutes earlier under similar circumstances, but the blandness bomb has negated that whole process...but what abs!
by Andrew Lee at April 2, 2003 1:04 PM
I love Janet's music, and I couldn't disagree with Space anymore. Stupid kid doesn't even know what the title of the song is! It probably wasn't even a Janet song. Anyways, I LOVE YOU JANET, I hope to be seeing more of you, SOON! (that is on TV lol)
by Sarah at April 20, 2003 12:46 PM
um, well I am a HUGE janet fan. So I don't feel the need to defend her. However, I will say that you were obviously moved in some way by the song b/c it made you want to write this letter. And that in itself is a testament to Janet's music.
by TIGGS at April 20, 2003 12:52 PM
Well, first of all compliment to this really nice written letter. But what really bugs me is, why does someone write with so much effort a letter to someone if he just really f***ing doesn't care?LMAO I don't get it, but that was quite entertaining. Oh and yes, I am also a Janatic.
by loveJ at April 20, 2003 1:48 PM
Janet is hottttt are you joking?

As an avid Janet Jackson fan (and former moderator of Janet-Jackson.com), I must contest the above stated by "Space," as he so calls himself.
Janet Jackson is one of the many artists that has been able to transcend decades with her music. Her music has touched people from around the world with it's meaning and with it's beauty. What you don't know about Janet is what only the fans know about her. Her albums are what make her such a huge success. Granted the hit singles help, but how many albums do you personally own that you prefer the songs that didn't make it to radio over the songs that did? Thank you, my point exactly. We fall in love with the singles because they have the power to attract, but once the album is in our hands, we learn that there is far more to Janet than just these "hit" pop songs. Her albums have a message, if you are smart enough to pick up on them, you will see it. The singles help draw people into this message, but it's the rest of the album that keeps people wanting more.
Personally, if it were not for Janet's "The Velvet Rope" album, I would not be able to sit here and type this out to you on this day. That album (which I might remind only spawned a few hits, and was trashed by every critic imaginable) was Janet's masterpiece. It came from a space where Janet was dealing with all the pain of her past, and letting it out through her music. Because of that album, many fans got through some hard times because of the sheer inspiration of it.
What you hear on the radio, "space," may not always be what is there to be heard. However, we all know that the consumer market is a hard one to "lure," and it is "pop" that sells, not deep meaningful songs that can change lives.
I end this with my final thought being a quote from Janet's character of "Justice" in the movie "Poetic Justice"
"Know what you're talking about before you judge...."

Get a life! You claim to not care about Janet Jackson's music, but yet you spend your time posting relatively lengthy letters about her on the Internet. Are you serious?
Anyway, Janet Jackson is an amazing songwriter, performer, singer, dancer, and actress, and her music has inspired millions, including every single contemorary pop star in music today. She's my personal inspiration, and through her album The Velvet Rope has given me so much strength in knowing that I am not alone in my feelings. Her music is from the heart and real, and I love her.

Space, you're a herb. Who's lives are you affecting? What communities have you helped? Have you donated any money to any organizations? Are you involved in anything other than your own SELFISH, egotistical gains. No one cares that you dislike Janet Jackson. You never were an admirer to begin with. You haven't listened to a stitch of her music and you probably don't own any of her albums. Before you try to speak on something, do some research and know what the hell you're talking about because you obviously sound ignorant. Why don't you just do yourself a favor and shut the fuck up.

space, You wrote this like 2 years ago...and your words have remained true for that long. Janet Jackson has good body and charisma, but sing about shit that truly matters...and what about that video in the early 90's when the guy reaches down and pulls that chain outta her pants? Did somebody say SLUT? And she's related to that fuck Michael!

This jew bastard doesn't know what he's talking about. He has nothing better to do, but to sit around criticizing others. If JJ were so unappealing and uninteresting than why in hell has she remained so popular for the past two decades. While so many other stars have falling, including her faggot-ass brother Michael Jackson, she remains as popular as ever. Get a life you dumb Jew.

This guy has to be nuts! Janet Jackson is like the greatest musician ever. Beatles? Bah! Jimi Hendrix? Bah! Nothing but JJ. I hear that JJ created the world we take for granted. Yea. She built the earth. Then she had Immaculate Conception and populated it in her image. Oh Janet how I praise thee. The blackout the other week? Janet. She just wanted us all to know that she is in power and not us. She did let the lights come back on so we could go about our paltry existance. Being able to see Mars without a telescope this last week? Janet again. She fiddled with the universe's gravitational whatnots and made Mars come closer so we could look at it without a Hubble telescope. Thank you Janet! I'm your #1 fan!
by Ezy at August 29, 2003 3:07 PM
It's cool to see people expressing themselves. As the person above me mentions the Beatles, I think, not everyone likes them, not everyone thinks the group is a bunch of geniuses. And why should they? I mean, we can't all like the same thing.
Janet IS relevant to me because she speaks about HER personal life, something A LOT of people are too afraid to do even with one-on-one relationships. She represents that you don't have to be "caucasian" (to be p.c.) in order to make it. She is constantly fighting for gay rights, african history, (yes TRUE African history, not what you see on tv, but ACTUAL knowledge about the thousands of cultures), children's rights, women's rights. She has used her person experience of being abused by her first husband to help other women to realize they have the power to leave their situations as well.
As for plastic surgery, all I will say about that is don't say anything until you've heard it from the horse's mouth. You can speculate all you want, but judging someone based on your ASSUMPTIONS, and LACK of MEDICAL KNOWLEDGE is rather lame.
Anyway to the author, cool letter man. I'm sure you don't care either way what people think, but awesome read dude!

I think it's cool to hear people express themselves. When people mention the name Justin Timberlake I go like not everyone likes him or atlest I don't. But when it comes to JANET AND MICHAEL JACKSON Ithink they are cool totally. They dance "ow" I mean awsome. Janet, Michael I love you guys, like a fan.

I'm obsessed, in love, gosh im crazy I can not explain the things I feel for MJJ Michael Joseph Jackson but I know they are true. His songs inspire me alot. But guess what I love Janet Jackson's songs, too. They are both hot I mean it. I just love the way they sing, dance, and dress. Iwish I could be like Janet at some time and like Michael at another.

by Ezy at January 13, 2004 12:41 PM
Janet is a lot like me. I eat cracker's, cookies and whatever I want to, in the bed. Who say's that a night time snack has to be sexual, but yet satifying. Janet, if you read these email's at all. I am a song writer and I would like to show you some song's that I wrote for you, because your "All for you." cd was good, but I think you were holding back. Maybe because you were hurting and you didn't want to show it as much. Whatever the case may be, I'm with you girlfriend. You are still the best because you are you. Peace and love to your family.

Yeah, um, people need to take these sorts of things a little less seriously. Janet Jackson has probably never even heard of this site, so there is truly no reason for leaving a message for her.
And by the way; people have opinions, and also a right to express them. Get over it, not everyone is going to agree.

Why were people so offended by seeing a glimpse of Janet's breast? It makes no sense. They're saying its not in keeping with high-quality family entertainment? - come on - half the commercials in the show were about erectile disfunction and kissing lesbians. And the other acts in the halftime show had the usual crotch-grabbing rap guys and bikini wearing women. So what the hell!

Let's see....Janet is a multiple Grammy Award winner, Golden Globe and Academy Award nominee for writing her own music, Billboard Awards, American Music Awards, Soul Train Awards...etc. Janet remains one of the best entertaners in the world...not to mention, one of the most beautiful. Janet still dominates the covers of many glamour and fitness magazines worldwide. She is just amazing. I'm sure a lot of people hitting 40 would love to look like Janet. All the hating is just so out there...it's pathetic. By the way, Janet's new single, 'Just A Little While', is phenominal.....Billboard's hot shot debut and Janet's 2nd best debut. I guess she still has many fan's out there. You go, Janet!!!!!!!!

I must admit my family has been the jokes of many people throughout the years especially uncle Mike . it sad to me because my family hasn't done anything to anyone we are like any other family who lives in America the only thing is we are famous & its hard no one knows how hard it truely is of been a Jackson or a Jackson kid . Aunt Janet has neen doing music for more than 20 years now if she was such untasteful then why is she still on top it don't make any sence at all . we go to school & become the jokes of every ones conversation & its annoying & its tiring & i'm speaking upon my Family & Aunt Janet . & i'll say please stop making posting upon our Family if you don't like us don't listen to us theres plenty of other artist to view & like .
