No Taste At All
by adam at 12:06 AM on March 31, 2005
I woke up this morning to find that my tongue was burning. Not from the phosphorus that I'd been eating the night before, but just the sensation of burning. Huh, that doesn't usually happen.
I got out of bed and had a cup of coffee. It smelled great, but ... well, I wouldn't say that it didn't taste good, I'd say that it just didn't taste. Period. I brushed my teeth and felt tingling and cold from the water, but I couldn't taste any mint. I went to the Flagship Diner on Queens Blvd for breakfast, and the orange juice wasn't sweet, the home fries weren't salty, and for all I poured on the syrup the french toast may as well have been warm cardboard.
My better half happened to be with me, and she's almost a doctor, so she checked me out and decided that I had some kind of nerve damage, probably caused by a viral infection. Where I picked this up who knows. I'm going to see my doctor tomorrow afternoon (a panicked phone call works sometimes) but in all odds I won't be able to taste anything until my nerves grow back, and that could take weeks or months.
I'm not going to pretend that I'm seriously disabled or anything; the worst thing that could happen is that I accidentally drink antifreeze mistaking it for Gatoraid and die. But it's weird not even being able to taste the inside of your own mouth. There's only one advantage that I've found so far, and I've got a can of it right here: MGD tastes EXACTLY like Chimay Trappist Ale when you've got no operational taste buds.

Another benefit is you can toss salad without the dressing.

Eek. Now's your chance to mosey down to the local sushi bar and sample some raw eel or octopus. Mmmm.

I love the randomness of the last comment.
That's kinda frightening. You forget how important 'taste' is as a sense.
Don't worry. You're sense of smell will take over and you'll be able to determine 'detrimental' and 'enjoy' food products.
by Lockheed at March 31, 2005 1:30 PM
Huh, I also wish to earn job in other country. What a coincidence.
Lockheed: taste is so closely tied to smell that we usually confuse the two. I can still smell everything I eat, but what I've found is that without the feedback from my taste buds I don't really enjoy eating anything - the interplay between taste and smell is what makes food GOOD.

I guess with you, when it's ass, you don't know it's ass. Get well soon.

DAMMIT that MG is too quick to the punch! *I* wanted to make a salad tossing comment. WAAAAAAAAAAAAAHH.
by Eviltom at March 31, 2005 8:58 PM
This sounds scary. What did the doctor say? How did this happen?
There there Tom, tomorrow's another day. :D

The prison version of salad tossing is so unlike actual salad tossing. Most terms, like spanking the monkey or choking the chicken, have some basis in reality. Not salad tossing.

Every person that has a stupid online diary, Get a life!!!!!!!! Nobody cares what happens to you. I bet most of you are over weight or really out of shape. Most of you probably have more internet friends then real friends. You people probably chat in chat rooms, thats the only way you can socialize. Get off your ass and go do something productive. I am in this stupid class bored as hell and someone told me about this gay site. Don't you people look at yourself and see Loser at Life. You people are pathetic.
by John at April 1, 2005 4:48 PM
Yeah, that's what I see when I look in the mirror: loser in life. With my salary, cars, home, wife, kids, friends, hobbies, sports. Yeah, most definitely. Good luck in school loser.
by anna at April 1, 2005 7:41 PM
I love that - someone takes the time to read and post on this site and then accuses the creators of having no life. Oooookay there kettle. Seriously bob, life is too short to complain about other people not doing what you think they should be doing. Instead, why not funnel your talents towards something creative, like macrame?
by Adam at April 1, 2005 8:55 PM
I think somebody, maybe MSN, should hire John to do the text for automated response moderator bots in chat rooms. Heh. I can see it now.
KittyKatShatOnMyHat Says: "hi ASL? how do I do those *oh so cute* emotes?"
John_Bot_Moderator Says: "Fuck you, you sad little fat ass gimp!"
KittyKatShatOnMYHat Says: "huh???"
John_Bot_Moderator Says: "For better sex visit http://www.random-sex-site-usually-spammed-to-your-email-address.com/"
KittyKatShatOnMyHat Says: "youre not very helpful."
John_Bot_Moderator Says: "Fuck you, you sad little fat ass gimp!"
KittyKatShatOnMyHat Says: "ive had enough of this."
John_Bot_Moderator Says: "Fuck you, you sad little fat ass gimp!"
By the way, uh, don't you guys state-side refer to toilets as John's?
by Ex Crimson Guard NCO at April 1, 2005 10:54 PM
Some do. So we shit on John like Merv Griffin shits on glass coffee tables while somebody jerks off underneath. Or was it the other way around?
by anna at April 2, 2005 10:42 AM
MG wants to know whether you've been eating more salads lately. Good thing you're a vegetarian.
by Eviltom at April 3, 2005 10:40 AM
You all are so funny
by Rich at April 12, 2005 4:12 PM
Yikes! Months? That's scary, because I'm losing a lot of my taste buds from a virus too, and not being able to taste for weeks or months... Well, personally, I think I'd rather be blind. ;_; Did/do you also have painful sores anywhere in your mouth? I do, and it SUCKS. Lost some weight, at least...
by Kym at July 20, 2005 10:54 PM
Don't wish to add to your miserby but I have been like this now for about 9 months following a virus. I have been to the hospital and they said that the nerves in my nose have been damaged by the virus and probably my taste and smell will not return. I hate this because I used to really enjoy my food.
by Sue at December 10, 2005 5:25 PM
I lost my taste buds as of Jan 2. The only thing I can taste is celery. It is sad when you can't enjoy food anymore. My Doctor doesn't seem to care because he doesn't send me to anyone who can help. I have lost 20lbs which is great but I wish I had lost it in healthy manor. Any one have any suggestions? Thank YOU
by L.M. at January 26, 2006 12:14 PM
I lost my sense of taste on Feb. 18th due to taking Lamisil for 18 days. It has been over 3 weeks now, and it still isn't back. I have a salty taste in my mouth but of all things cannot taste salt or sugar. The only thinkgs i can taste are raw vegetables, root beer, and boiled eggs. Everything else turns to mush in my mouth with no taste, such as bread, cheese, salad dressing......yuck. The things I loved.
by Sherrie at March 15, 2006 3:19 AM
I also have lost all sense of taste 3 weeks ago. It started 2 months ago and was off and on then all of a suden it just quit. I have been trying to find things that I can tolorate but nothing is apealing except water. I'm looking for some kind of liquid meal replacment so I dont loose to much weight. This is not fun at all. The doctor sent me to a ear Eye nose guy but I cant get in for another week. they CT scand my head. Boy this sucks!!!
by Bill at April 7, 2006 10:34 PM
If you frequent the Flagship Diner, I'd say that losing your sense of taste is a good thing. That restaurant is abolutely horrible!
by Dan at May 14, 2007 11:44 AM
I came down with a case of viral menigites less then 2 weeks ago and I have no taste buds either. I loved cheese and that is horrible now, salt the same way. Doctor said not sure if and when they will return. Sucks trying to find a food that you can actually enjoy good diet I guess.
by carol at June 1, 2007 11:49 AM
aziz ur rehman hashmi please give it a break, ive seen enough of your comments to know that its very likely that you are a teenaged Jewish kid who probably feels very smug at how sneaky you're being. God i hope you are a teenager.
Anyway stop living up to the stereotype and get lost if you have nothing useful to say.
I havent tasted anything for a week now and can barely get through half my dinner. But its actually not that serious and it should be back soon. Get to the doctor and dont research it too much yourself, all i had was a bit of a weird cold, no other symptoms but just feeling shit with no tastebuds! , i was actually convinced i had mouth cancer or something since ive been sneaking a lot of my uncles cigars (he has so many the rich bastard!) Internet can be a scary place if you are not careful- just too much information available at once- you just have to take a step back..
Get to the doctor though, its no use saying oh im ok and then dying!!!!
by Dougal at February 24, 2008 9:53 PM
Its been a week now for me no sense of smell or taste. I went to the Dr. and he told me that I had an ear and sinus infection. Im on my 2nd round of antibotics, my husband also has this we don't know where we picked this up but boy it sure sucks. Anyone know how to get it back ? other than the Dr?
