New blood, mixed blood
by chuck woolery at 11:37 AM on June 08, 2004
A new entry to mark a first in my life. I got my first dog.
I've "had" dogs before, but they've always been family pets, and never been my responsibility. This one is my responsibility, which is a significant event for me. The experience both says some things about me, and has taught me a couple things too.
Firstly, I guess it says that I feel settled down. I've wanted a dog since I was a teenager, but I've never been in the right (settled) place to have one. I moved an average of 2 times a year over the 10 years from high school to the end of university, and once per year since then (all numbers are approximate (if anyone cares)). Now I'm in a job I love, with the right house type situation coming (I move this coming weekend) and I don't see myself going anywhere incompatible with owning a dog. Settled, at least as much as I can be.
Secondly, I'm not a dog snob. I had the pleasure of adopting a very nice dog from the local SPCA. They think he is a bloodhound / rotteweiler cross, but with a shelter dog you can never be 100% sure of lineage. I had looked at various purebreds and considered going through the process of finding a breeder etc... but I decided to go the SPCA route when this dog became available.
Thirdly, I have less patience, and need more sleep than I thought I did. The dog is only 4 months old, and needs to be walked in the morning and evening, and ideally in the afternoon too. I used to go to bed at 10 (ish) and wake at 7:30 to get ready for work. Over the past few days I've been going to bed at 11 (as that's when he's ready to go to bed) and getting up at 6:30 to spend an hour with him before getting ready and trundling off to work (certainly not skipping off to work). This is starting to wear on me. With the lack of sleep thing, and the natural exuberance of a puppy, my patience is getting a little thin. and my yawns are getting more frequent.
Lastly, I am not nearly as imaginative as I thought I was. I've had this puppy since last Wednesday and it does not yet have a name. I'm partial to the name Hubert which is a direct rip-off from the name of the bloodhound in the movie Best in Show. Unfortunately my girlfriend hates the name, and so it has now gone by the wayside. The shelter had given him the moniker Jim-Bob, but that's out, as my girlfriend's father is named Jim.
So to end this entry, does anyone have any suggestions for a name?

For some reason, I think Seaver would be a nice name for a dog. Hubert is funny though. God how I love that movie. Has anyone seen Club Dread & Supertroopers? (different people, familiar breed of funny)

I've "had" dogs before
Why the quotes? I remember Lockheed had a thing for cats. Do you have a thing for dogs? If so, I'd rather not hear about it.

The above comment was edited because I'm a dumbass.

So Jim is out. But if he's got slack you could call him Bob.

I missed the double entendre on the "had", until you were kind enough to point it out to me. Thanks.
All I meant was the not really type of quotes, dogs I've lived with that weren't mine and that kind of thing.
I like the name bob as well for a dog. I'm having a little trouble selling my girlfriend on that one as well.

Came across this today because Sean's roommate found a litter of kittens in his Jeep and I was looking for ways to care for newborn kittens. I met this one last night. Though it's for cats and not dogs, the name sources might be a good start. Favorite video game/movie characters, etc.

You can't go wrong with Bone Sauce. That was my 1st choice for a name for my son.

how about ludwig? ernst? fritz? fibber mcgee? bone sauce is pretty choice, and you could call him bones or boner for short.

there is a stray cat that lives by the pool in the back yard of my house. i named him dastardly, though it could just as easily be a female.
how about hippopotamus?

Note: I didn't really think up Bone Sauce, that was Frank Zappa when his son was born. I think he wound up with an even weirder name like Moon Unit.

Just call out names and see what he answers to. Of course, this could backfire and you end up with a dog named asshole.

Kane. I vote for Kane.
Don't ask where it came from... just seems appropriate for a bloodhound/rottweiler mix.
Either that, or Killer. Especially if he's a lovey-dovey doggie. :)

Perhaps the newly embedded picture will help people decide on suggestions.
I'm thinking perhaps Otto...

What an adorable dog! How about... "Oops"?

When I tried to upload an image of mine per Mr. B's instructions, I too wound up with the link "view image" rather than the word I wanted it to be. It is tricky messing with that stuff. For older folk, that is.

Oh! Oh!
What about McGruff? Perfect, since you're a crime dog too!
by Linz at June 10, 2004 12:31 PM
Linz, that's brilliant. I think I'll pitch McGruff tonight.
I'm going to see if I can't change the "view picture" link to something else. We'll see...
by chuckwoolery at June 10, 2004 1:25 PM
Yay!!
The link says "very nice dog" on my computer & opens to a cute-ass picture of your dog... did someone change it for you?
by Linz at June 10, 2004 3:02 PM
Congratulations, I'm happy for you and your dog. Maybe call your dog Reagan or just Ray. I like the name Rollo. It's kewl. Best of luck to you, and many happy years ahead...man, sounds like I'm leaving or something...ha. I'm not.
by AlterEgo at June 13, 2004 12:29 AM
Looks like Otto is the name that has now stuck. My girlfriend didn't like McGruff...
As for the link, I didn't change it. Perhaps MG did when I wasn't looking...
Not going incommunicado here either, but with a new dog, and a new place etc.... I will only be hanging around here very occasionally during work hours...
