how beautiful if nothing more than to wait at zion's door

by mg at 11:36 AM on June 21, 2004

Yesterday was Father’s Day. Considering that my dad wasn’t really around much when I was growing up, it was never a holiday I celebrated. Sure, I have an uncle who is the closest thing I have to a father figure in my life, but he has kids of his own, and unless you are Nicole Richie, it just isn’t cool to horn in on someone else’s dad.

Needless to say, then, that Father’s Day, as a holiday, has always had about as much significance in my life as Hanukkah, Secretary’s Day, Greek Easter, or Chanukah. I didn’t get a day off from school or work, so it’d normally pass me by completely unnoticed.

That is, until this year.

I’ve just been recently called the master of life style mysteries, and I have another big one to reveal. No, I’m not gay, that totally doesn’t make sense with the setup above. Why would you even think that? I mean, unless you mean gay happy, because I can totally get on board with that one.

But, why am I so happy?

Because this Father’s Day was my first as a father. Just three days earlier, on Friday morning at 11:29, after 41 hours of labor, little Frances Maxine was born. She clocked in at 8.1 lbs, and 19 inches.

She has everyone one of her little fingers and everyone one of her little toes that she is supposed to. She is pink and soft, has the lungs of Beverly Sills, and smells like heaven.

If anyone has ever thought about having children, I’d say go right ahead, because it is just the best damn thing ever. Right after little Franny was born, I told Amanda that no matter what other crap we’ve done, this little girl was beautiful and perfect, and totally makes up for the rest of the mess we’ve made of our lives.

Never one not to use this website for to beg for material possessions, I thought I'd take a moment to shill for baby gifts. Our baby registry at Target, and at Amazon.com.

Let me be the one to start off the congratulations! Welcome to the world, Frances. It's all downhill from here.

HOLY CRAP!

You are so good at the surprises.

Yeah, I was married last year. Um, and I had a kid yesterday.

CONGRATULATIONS, she is quite precious.

by Linz at June 21, 2004 11:48 AM

Congrats mucho amigo! That is just about the coolest thing I've heard though you are a little too good at hiding your personal info. I mean, shit, I thought this was supposed to be a blog, not a hide-yourself-away-log.

I called my dad on father's day to have him say my sister is busy and can't do anything so let's forget it.

FUCK YOU DAD, YOU GIGANTIC ASSHOLE!

But still, MG, congrats!

Yeah, I think Mr. Blank said it best.

Congratulations MG and Amanda, that is one beautiful baby. :-)

CONGRATULATIONS! 41 hrs. my god! I thought 18 was bad. Did she go au natural, epidural, C-section? I agree with your last statement-Joseph and I are much happier and fight much less now with Owen. She is beautiful!

by Shannon at June 21, 2004 3:14 PM

WAIT! I hate to spoil the love fest here, but how do we know she's yours? That could be any baby pic you pulled off of the internet. How do we know we're not getting Punk'd, like the whole world is with this Ashton/Demi thing.

Hey everyone, I just had a baby too. Except I am too lazy to steal a baby pic from the net. Send me stuff! Preferably drugs.

by Eviltom at June 21, 2004 3:27 PM

That is great. But man, you've got a tough road ahead of you. Babies are hard, toddlers are harder and teens will drive you to the brink of suicide. Just something to look forward to.

She sure is cute though.

i wish FMG the best start in life.

Mazel tov!

by Adam L. at June 22, 2004 9:07 AM

Congrats.

I see that the Amazon.com Link shows her name as Amanda G--------.

Isn't your last name Gonzalez? I thought salve was out of style these days.

by ChuckWoolery at June 22, 2004 10:25 AM

No Chuck, I'm pretty sure I spelled my last name right when I set up the wishlists.

Minja! Good to hear from you man.

Tom - wait, you think she isn't mine? Oh, wait, you mean that I don't have a baby, not that the baby I have isn't mine. I was thinking we might need to go on Maury for a paternity test.

Shan: 41 hours did suck. She had contractions for 29 hours before we even went to the hospital. For those of you who've never given birth, imagine the most intense pain you've ever felt. Then imagine it coming between 5 and 20 minutes apart for nearly two days straight. She got the epi almost immediately (well, a couple hours) after we went to the hospital, which helped a hell of a lot.

Michael! Mazel Tov. I know, I am not the best at keeping in touch, but I do read the site, and am thinking of you. Wow. Wonderful!

by L.J. at June 22, 2004 12:51 PM

You are one sneaky mofo there MG. Congrats man, she's adorable.

by Ezy at June 22, 2004 1:51 PM

Oh, last name right? Good good. After I added that post I checked the other link, and noticed the spelling was the same. huh.

Funny that you edited out your last name when it is up on the top of both links you've put in your post...

I wouldn't have put your name in the post if it wasn't in the links. Sorry.

by chuckwoolery at June 22, 2004 3:25 PM

I don't mind anyone knowing my last name. It'd take someone a second to look up the domain registration and find both my name and address if they already know about the site. The reason I changed it is that I don't want Google picking it up and people who shouldn't/don't know about the site might find it.

by mg at June 22, 2004 4:04 PM

MG- I like how Chuck thought your last name was Gonzalez. Actually, you do look like you have a little Mexican in you. And I do mean "in" you. HAHA. I kill me.

Oh, about why I didn't think the tyke was yours... isn't it well known that you have a low sperm count? I thought you told me sometime in the mid-90's that you were down to 15 sperm total. I would have imagined you would have used up all 15 by now.

by Eviltom at June 22, 2004 9:10 PM

Congrats on the tiny one!

Seriously though, do you think it's a good idea to put her in stocking caps and pose her all gangsta style with her tongue wagging about? Who does that?

And Linz called to say that this better not mess up the cd exchange.

Speaking of which, what do you think babies like more: Hal & Oates or Peaches?

by lajoie at June 23, 2004 12:28 AM

Congratulations MG! And my best to Amanda, too.

by jean at June 23, 2004 2:59 AM

P.S. Eff, I had to laugh. I had something similar happen to me on Mother's Day. That stuff sucks.

by jean at June 23, 2004 3:02 AM

Your poor wife! I tried to do the natural way for 8 hrs. of contractions 2-3 minutes apart. When the hospital said I was only 1 cm dilated I told them to bring on the drugs!!! She is adorable!

by Shannon at June 23, 2004 9:38 AM

CONGRATULATIONS! Its like christmas! which is to say, presents and fun (and not jesus at all. but these days girls can be whatever they want so who is to say?) And at the end of the day there is a big garbage bag filled with used wrapping paper but instead you have diapers. Man i love surprises.

Happy Fathers Day!
