you've got to learn to reach out there and grab it

I realized quite a while ago that the little thumbnail picture of me that appears in the upper left hand corner of every post is getting a little old. Not just in the, “I’m bored with it” way, but in the, “Damn, that picture was taken almost a decade ago” kind of way.
Which is not to say that I’ve aged terribly much in the past ten years, but still. Now, I’ve been thinking of changing the picture for a while now. Certainly since at least last year, when I shaved my head for the first time. I thought, “I now look sufficiently different that there must be some law requiring me to make the change.” For some reason (all signs point to laziness) I never did make the change though, and never really thought about it again.
Until a few weeks ago, after I posted the first few shots from my new(ish) camera phone (a feature now spun off into its own site – plug plug). One of the shots was a self-portrait, about which the oh too kind Jean remarked “MG, your thumbnail _really_ doesn't do you justice.”
I’ve been thinking about that comment for a while now, wondering if that little picture really captured me. And I’ve come to the decision that, of course it doesn’t. I’m one attractive man, and that little picture makes me look like an extra on This Old House. So, I suppose it is time to shake things up and use a new picture.
But, as indecisive that I am, I can’t make the decision for myself. Below are five little picture, except for the first (which was the shaved head picture I intended to use last year), they’ve all been taken in the last couple weeks. I’m not sure why I choose the pictures I did, but uhm, yeah, there they are.
Its been a long time that I've had seen that little picture staring back at me from this website. I'm going to really miss me.

Sorry man but you kind of resemble an Auschwitz victim in the shaved head pic. The second one is sufficiently handsome, the third looks a little special, the fourth one looks like you're up to something devious, and the last one reminds me of something woodsy for one reason or another. "Mg's a lumberjack and he's ok". I'd go with the second or last one if I was you leaning more towards the second. This is coming from a guy with a soul patch in his picture though. Take it with a grain of salt.

Number 5, the one all the way over to the right is the the Mikey that I know...

I hate drawing myself, but I prefer that to photos of me.
by MrBlank at December 3, 2003 1:58 PM
soulpatch? i just thought that was some dirt.
heh, heh...
mg, i'm no supporter of any picture of you where you're smiling. call me a traditionalist, but the scowl lends a certain credence to your posts. the first picture (starting left) is a little severe. the second is pretty good. third would be my choice due to the scowl. fourth looks like below the frame a silk shirt & some assless leather chaps are happening, along witrh two excessively groomed men, linked to your arms. the fifth would be my second choice, should you want to appear happy, and (still) fuzzy.
another thought would be to just replace all our pictures with a different ones of yours. in that case, i'll take the auschwitz one.

Oh shit. That is dirt. I retract the soul patch comment.

You know that guy Hamdi, who got designated an enemy combatant and thrown into a legal black hole? The Supremes are going to hear his case this week. And there he is, cleaned up a bit, on the far right. Go with #2.

by the way...
john turturro called, he wants his crazed look back.
by lajo at December 3, 2003 6:47 PM
MG in living color? Hmm, somehow it doesn't feel like badsam that way. The second picture is definitely the best choice (the 3rd pic is for the cover of your first album, remember?)

Actually, I was going for Travis Bickle (Bobby D. in Taxi Driver). I knew that picture was a bad idea, I seem to remember last year, when I showed it to EvilTom, the only thing he had to say is "Why aren't you wearing a shirt?"
I'll never understand you people. I almost didn't include pic #2, because I didn't really like it, but that definitely seems the way the mob is moving. I don't get it, but I'm too much of a populist to ignore public opinion.

Yours is not to understand us. But I agree with Lucy, that menacing B&W shot of you defines this site.

Let's also get a new pic of Linz and Manna!
MG- btw... any pic of you smiling makes you look like a child molester.
by Eviltom at December 4, 2003 9:45 AM
New pic of me? Okay.... mg, can I send you some?
2 or 4, 2 or 4!
Four is the best picture but god forbid you look too nice for all your mayhem here...
by Linz at December 4, 2003 9:52 AM
No can do. I am still here, mired in my digi-cam hell. The one you see had to be scanned with our ancient scanner and then cropped manually. I have this Dazzle thing but my son refuses to install it.
by anna at December 4, 2003 6:57 PM
i retract all earlier statements that do not include the words "john turturro".
the black & white photo defines the badsam experience and i for one would be sad to see it go.
if you do have to use a new picture, why not write one of those annoying scripts that turns my mouse arrow into a little mg head that yawns?
or better yet, barks?
by lajo at December 4, 2003 8:08 PM
Anyone wants a new pic, let me know. I suppose I could even do something with rollover of the image, or adding my pictures to the author pages. Because, based on the comments here, it definitely doesn't seem like I should be changing my old thumbnail, despite the fact it's a decade old. As well.
by mg at December 5, 2003 11:13 AM
'If it isn't broken don't fix it" comes to mind. How much of an ass pain would it be to put some pictures on our web pages?
by Ezy at December 5, 2003 11:43 AM
Not too difficult. Just a template change, and adding pictures for whichever authors wanted them.
by mg at December 5, 2003 11:53 AM
That would be pretty cool to have a small collage of pics for those who wants them. What do you think?
by Ezy at December 5, 2003 12:11 PM
I'm probably the only one narcissistic enough to bother...
by Linz at December 5, 2003 12:50 PM
Nah Linz. I'd do it too.
by Ezy at December 5, 2003 1:00 PM
I'd say pic #2 is the most flattering, but now that people are saying it, the current pic does seem firmly entwined with the BadSam esprit. MG, I guess it's up to you. And I don't think you look like a child molester except for in #3... Hee!
by jean at December 6, 2003 4:01 AM
Hi ... just happened to chance on this site and found it rather interesting. Just wanted to say that the present thumbnail is probably the best. Yeah.. i'd go with the scowl too. The smiles just make you too much of a nice guy, though that 5th pic is so very pleasant to look at ... ;) Take care everyone. Might just come back again to read your postings.
