He Said, She Said

Alert readers may have glimpsed this piece earlier. It was since removed due to, er, technical difficulties. As for the rest of you, as they used on say on NBC rerun promos, if you haven't seen it then it's new to you.
I'll proceed with utmost caution so as not to risk incurring the wrath o' Trixie, who lambasted MG in the comments section at 3:16 AM on 11/28/02.
Another day, anothe celebrity breakup . More recently, Lisa Marie and Nicholas Cage called it quits after 108 days in wedded bliss.
Stars seemingly cultivate longer term relationships with their stalkers than their chosen mates. In fact, I couldn't name a single sucessful, long-term marriage among the Tinseltown A-list. Some would cite Paul Newman/Joanne Woodward as the paragon of fidelity, but according to this database, she played the homewrecker role in his first foray into matrimony. Alec/Kim---history. Tom/Nicole---over with. Billy Bob/Anglina---splitsville. Robert Blake/---uh, never mind.
I've read that, contrary to popular lore that has one in two US marriages ending in divorce or murder-suicide, the actual divorce rate hovers around 20%; whereas in Hollywood, it's closer to 100%. Why the disparity? Do thespians have some innate aversion to monogamy or do environmental factors come into play?
Well, this here's your chance to sound off. Can you provide answers to these questions? Am I way off base? Could you name a successful marriage among the feted rich & famous?
Clearly, I'm not above groveling for comments. EvilTom, bring on the needling. Trixie, castigate me for my lack of sensitivity to celebs' plight. Say anything.

I'm racking my brains, but I can't think of anyone.

Paul and Linda McCartney..I think they were happily married until she passed away. I'm not sure how long though..

I think creative people are generally more prone to imbalance and impetuousness. Hence, what looks like a great, romantic idea becomes a very scary, too-real reality as time goes on.
For better or worse, creative=crazy.

fame. money. conflicting entourages. the unreality of the hollywood lifestyle. and most especially -- shifts in star-power. with both parties' careers out there for all to see, it can be devastating to go from being yourself to being so-and-so's spouse.
or, in a word: ego.

Well, that explains it and I really appreciate the relative outpouring of commentary. But are there any exceptions to this rule? Maybe Tom Hanks 'n What's-her-name?
by anna at December 2, 2002 7:37 PM
Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson. Mel Gibson and his wife. Crocodile Dundee and Linda Kozlowski.
That's about it, though.

I bet J-Lo and Matt Damon's man-wife, Ben Aflek will have a happy and lengthy marriage.

Ozzy and his wife Sharon. They're crazy and still together.

The answer is quite simple--these people are narcissistic, hedonistic, and have more money than they could spend in seven lifetimes. Furthermore, they don't work. Yeah yeah, they film for 16 hours a day blah blah blah. That's 3 or 4 months spent eating shrimp in a posh trailer with assistants that handle every mundane task that regular people handle themselves--you know, grocery shopping, wiping your ass. These people meet on the set--it's a fucking fantasy world! When they get home, the vapidity of both parties rears its ugly head. Why the need to get married? Why not just bang until it gets boring, then move on? It's much cheaper that way.

It's a case of inflated ego + inflated ego= BOOOM!
I sat next to Alec Baldwin about a year ago in a Sushi joint on Columbus Ave around 86thst. He was on his cell, pampering Kim B, with kind puppylove words, maybe these stars just fall in puppy love, because their worlds are so convuluted(sp) by tinsel town romance.
