By now, everyone has seen the picture of the Pakistani protestor who set himself on fire while attempting to set the American flag ablaze. He may have been the only person to set himself on fire, but he certainly wasn’t the only one trying to spark up Old Glory. Some people in Pakistan sure do hate America. I just can’t figure that one out.

And people in Afghanistan hate America more now than they did two months ago. Don’t they understand this is a humanitarian war? These people should be thanking us for trying to liberate them, not setting our flags on fire and hijacking our children’s television characters for their own insidious purposes.

We’re dropping food from planes, for goodness sakes. There are people living in America who would kill to have food dropped on them from planes. Right now I’d give my right gonad for a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. Man, I’m starving.

I’m sitting here hungry, and there are all these ungrateful Afghanis who don’t appreciate everything America is doing for them. Okay, sure, some of the food has fallen into minefields, and maybe some people have gotten exploded. But, people of Afghanistan, because I know you are all avid Bad Samaritan readers, it isn’t our fault if you get blowed up. I mean, sheesh, if you live in a country with more landmines per capita than any other in the world you’d think you’d have learned not to run all willy nilly into minefields.

It’s not like the United States was even the country that planted those minefields (do you plant minefields; is that what it’s called?). It was your own government that planted all those land mines. We are trying to be nice by dropping aid packages, don’t blame us. Blame yourselves. Or, better yet, blame the Russians, they probably planted some of those landmines. How come you aren’t setting the ol’ hammer and sickle alight?

Or, if you need to irrationally hate someone why don’t you hate Microsoft for the setting unrealistic expectations of mine removal techniques with their Minesweeper game. Everyone already hates Bill Gates, so you’d finally be with the rest of the world, not against it.

And Microsoft even has that flaggy looking logo you could print out on your Macs and then burn, since you guys love flag burning so much. I’d guess there are more flag burnings per capita in Afghanistan than in any other country. More flag burnings than landmines even.

Unfortunately, even with all the other people to hate and flags to burn, if there is an American Flag in Afghanistan, there is certainly a book of matches and a can of lighter fluid nearby. Take, for example, the unfortunate story of Miss Al Quaeda.

Miss Al Quaeda was a participant in this year’s Miss Taliban Pageant. Prognosticators had her picked to win the contest, hands down, until she made an ill-fated choice in swimwear. The crowd, which had cheered her plate spinning abilities, and applauded her magnificent full-body evening-veil, quickly turned against her. I think the current spate of "anti-BinLaden" posters, websites etc are very childish and demean the whole issue. I had hoped the bombing of the WTC would wake Americans up to the fact the the US Government is funding atrocities in Israel and other countries where Islamic fundementalists are being villified. Unfortunately instead of saying "hey, this was a terrible atrocity, but as well as bringing the perpetrators to justice, perhaps we should question why someone would feel so strongly as to do this" - the general reaction has been blind hatred and ignorance. This can only result in the conflict running on and on... this isnt a war on Afghanistan it should be a war against oppression and evil.

Sadly what could have been a turning point in history has become a witch hunt and a strengthening of hatred and ignorance of any culture that isnt white, anglo saxon, protestant.

I think that the real problem there in afganistan, and why all of them hate us americans so much, is that because, they only get to see the bad stuff that our country does, and thier government only allows them to think that way, because even if they won't admit it, they do envy us all, because we live in complete freedom. Us women can walk the streets without fear of death for showing skin, and we have the right to free speech, I honestly think that if everyone there knew what it was like to live here in America the beautiful, they would come to understand us, and that someday peace could be brought between the world. I don't understand why we have to hate each other, we are all god's children, and he loves us all the same, no matter what. So I feel pity for those in Afganistan, not hatred, and may god bless those innocent civilians who are living in terror.

There is a big difference between a trade embargo and flying a plane into a building full of civilians, how come none of you liberals types can see that?

People get their panties in a know about the US trade embargoes against Iraq, saying we are starving children. No we aren't. A country, has a right to not do business with another country. No one says people who boycott Nike because they use underage labor in Thailand is starving Nike executives. If Nike wants your money, they will change their practices. If Iraq wants our money, they will change their practices. If they don't why should the US support a system it disaproves of? And, you are dead wrong about embargoes with Afghanistan, the United States disaproved of their government, but still sent them aid.

And, I'm all for understanding each other's religions, customs, etc. But how come for you types, that respect is only one way. The United States has to respect Islam, but they have free reign to bomb busses in Isreal? Bullshit. If they didn't fly a bulding into the WTC, no one would be over there droping bombs on them now.

I think the problems stem from the kind of craziness that religions sometimes foster.

Don't get me wrong, there are *good* things about religions. But there's always a tempataion among the ignorant to take their religious beliefs too far. Radical Christians, radical Muslims, radical Jews - they all fight kill and manipulate governments into doing their bidding. Under pretexts of war, hegemony or strategic interests, these radicalized folks are at a point in their lives where they abandon all reason.

They read texts that give them absolute authority from God, Allah, Yaweh, whoever - to do whatever they want, murder whoever they want. And the rest of us, the sane ones, are left to struggle to maintain control of our own governments and places of worship, to try to slow down the erosion. And its getting worse and worse.

The Southern Baptist Convention used to claim peacemaker Jimmy Carter as one of its members. They emblazoned his name on their literature and brochures. A couple of years ago, Carter sent them official notice to take his name off of all their promotional literature, because they are basically no longer the peaceful organization of enlightened folks that they used to be.

Then there are Jewish folks who believe that Israel is a democracy. But I don't see any Palestinians voting. That its a land of religious freedom. Yet they have an official state-sponsored religion. People need to wake up and take a look at the situation there from a completely detached perspective. Pretend in your mind that they are Hindus and Buddhists, rather than Jews and Muslims. When you do so, you'll see suddenly just how much the "Buddhists" are being abused, and just how intolerant the "Hindus" are.

It goes on and on like that. And moderates can't get a word in edgewise anymore. For example, September 11. That was something that was touted by many of the more radicalized Muslims as "a great blow for Islam" (of course, the moderates and liberal Muslims didn't like it much, though).

I find it especially interesting that radical Islam says that Allah is has no compassion for Americans and Europeans. That there should be no mercy, as this is the will of Allah.

You know..... "Allah.... the merciful .... the compassionate".

I guess to radicalized Muslims, that statement is some kind of joke that you can just snicker at. Other Muslims, good muslims, take it rather seriously. The same way that good Christians like Jimmy Carter take peace and kindness and mercy seriously.

Hi everyone!

I want to make a gift to my boyfriend. Something special :). I just want to say a few words about my boyfriend. He is my soulmate and i love him. He’s Welsh but without a Welsh accent. Just a northern twang. This is something which troubles him from time to time. He likes talking to himself.

He also likes dogs and knowing every lyric to every Beatles’ song ever. I decided, stupidly, to challenge him on that last point. We were sat at a studenty cafe with rainbow coloured chairs drinking mint tea one afternoon. I picked what I thought was a less-well-known Beatles song and got him to tell me the lyrics. Honey Pie (my favourite), Blackbird, Maxwell’s Silver Hammer - he knew them all, and not just the chorus.

He is excellent at getting himself into situations that other, more practical, people probably would be able to avoid. Map reading is definitely one of his least developed skills. Ask him where north is and he’ll probably say something like “ummm, which way is the wind coming from?” Other things he has been known to do include dropping his ipod into the bath (he was reaching forward for his watch, forgetting that his headphones were attached to something - and then hearing the ipod slip with a gentle splosh into the water) and window shopping - meaning taking a close look at ladies’ underwear and not realising the shop assistant was standing in the shop window until he looked up and saw her scornful face.

What do you recommend? Any advices will be more then welcome.
